The number of children and young people catching measles accross Cheshire and Merseyside is rising. Measles is a very infection disease and spreads easily by coughing and sneezing. Measles can be a mild disease for some individuals, but occasionally it can be very serious, infecting the brain and causing long standing damage. There is a very high risk of infection to children or young people who have not received any protection.
MMR immunisation is the best way to protect your child against measles. Not all individuals respond adequately to a single dose of vaccine , so to ensure protection, children or young people need to receive 2 doses of MMR vaccine.
The first does is usually given at 13 months of age and the second dose before children attend school but any young person up to the age of 24 can be given the immunisation.
If your child has missed one or both of the jabs, please contact the practice on 0151 426 5253 to arrange an MMR vaccination appointment.
